Porcelain Veneers are used to correct a number of aesthetic and functional dental concerns.
Porcelain veneers may be used to:
- Close gaps or spaces between teeth
- Repair broken or chipped teeth
- Correct discoloration on teeth
- Improve the appearance of crooked or uneven teeth
Porcelain veneers are ultra thin, translucent shells of porcelain that are permanently bonded to the front of teeth. Advances in material make today’s porcelain veneers look and feel more like natural teeth. The dental porcelain that is used to create porcelain veneers is very fine, allowing the restorations to reflect light just as natural tooth enamel would.
It is important to retain as much of the natural tooth structure as possible and our dentists use very conservative methods for preparing the teeth. It is equally important that the proper steps are taken to ensure that the bite will remain stable and comfortable after the porcelain veneers are bonded to the teeth. We work with sophisticated dental laboratories and expert ceramists to ensure that we achieve the best results for our patients.
The process for porcelain veneers will take place over several visits. During your initial visit, you will receive a comprehensive examination to review your medical and dental history, discuss your cosmetic dentistry goals, check your teeth for decay, screen for oral cancer and periodontal disease and take necessary diagnostic x-rays, photographs and impressions. Using the information we collect, our doctors will prepare a treatment plan and simulate the proposed results using digital imaging and diagnostic models.
Once the treatment plan is approved, the teeth are prepared and you will be fitted for temporary veneers which are made out of plastic. The temporaries will give you an opportunity to “try on” your proposed treatment and allow the dentists to make any adjustments to the look and fit. Impressions are made of the temporaries and sent along with the digital imaging and diagnostic models to the dental laboratory where your porcelain veneers will be made.
Your final restorations will be adjusted in our office to fit perfectly and tinted to match your natural teeth. The porcelain veneers will then be permanently bonded to the front of your teeth for beautiful and natural looking results.
To maintain the beauty and longevity of your porcelain veneers, it is important to continue an oral health routine that includes professional cleanings and visits to our office. Porcelain veneers are very durable and highly resistant to stains from food and drink so you can be sure your smile will remain youthful and bright.
Porcelain veneers can be used to repair a single tooth or multiple teeth. For teeth that need additional restoration or support, dental crowns may be indicated. Dental crowns are very similar to porcelain veneers, but where porcelain veneers just cover the front of the tooth, a dental crown covers the entire tooth, similar to a thimble.
Our doctors will evaluate your situation to determine which restoration or combination of restorations are best suited for you. If you are considering porcelain veneers to enhance your smile, contact us to schedule a consultation and find out if porcelain veneers are right for you.
