Over the past two decades, teeth whitening/bleaching has become one of the most popular dental treatments. Everyone experiences tooth discoloration, either yellow or stained teeth from everyday foods and beverages. There are many over the counter teeth whitening kits, but the best way to whiten your teeth is through professional treatments.
Depending on the cause for tooth discoloration, Shiflet, Cox & Morgan may recommend one or a combination of tooth whitening treatments. For severe tooth discoloration, restorative procedures such as porcelain veneers and dental crowns may be required to whiten teeth.
Causes of Discolored Teeth
Common causes for discolored teeth may include:
- Dark foods and beverages: coffee, tea, whine, sodas, etc.
- Exposure to fluoride
- Some types of medication
Treatment for Discolored Teeth
In office whitening is a quicker, stronger form of over the counter whitening kits. A hydrogen peroxide gel substance is applied to your teeth and a laser light activates the gel. This procedure takes between 30 and 45 minutes and sometimes requires follow up visits.
Zoom whitening is a 1-time in office procedure that can make teeth up to 8 shades lighter. A hydrogen-peroxide whitening gel is applied to the teeth in three 15 minute sessions, working together with the Zoom light to break up discoloration and stains.
At Home Teeth Whitening
The dentists at Shiflet, Cox & Morgan can create a customized tray and provide you with professional strength teeth bleaching gel to whiten your teeth gradually at home. The teeth bleaching trays are typically worn for several hours a day or overnight for the best results. At home teeth whitening can be combined with one of our in office whitening procedures for maximum results.
No teeth whitening solution is permanent. You must be careful to avoid dark foods and beverages, practice good dental hygiene, and consider repeating whitening treatments to maintain a bright, white smile.
